Lawless in Concert at The Roxy January 2009
What's New from Sharon:Lucy Lawless at January 2009 Xena Convention Lucy's Blog: (click here for more messages) 11/5/08 -- What a great day for America and the world! Congratulations to you all. Now I can become an American citizen, I guess. It was a momentous relief for me to hear a President mention “Global Warming” with the gravitas it deserves, not a nebulous concept to be buried under platitudes. Over the course of my life, weather patterns in the country of my birth, NZ, have changed dramatically. Perhaps we are more sensitive being a long, skinny island nation. We also have Antarctica in our back yard, so we feel any threat to the ice caps as our own. I am sorry for Prop 8. The laws of a nation should be about safety and fairness. They should not enforce second-class citizenry. I have my own issues with “marriage.” I think it is a throwback to feudal times. It ought to be phased out. We should have agreements that get revised at ten-year periods. I can't think why gay people should necessarily want it, but if they want it with all its strictures and ownership over one another, then let 'em have it. What's the big deal? What the heck are we afraid of sharing? Our sacred heterosexual rite? Being raised in a moderately religious home, I grew up being taught that marriage was a Sacrament -- Sacred. I was told, "No one must come between a husband and wife." Then I would look over at a relative with a black eye meted out by her husband in the privacy of their sacred matrimonial chamber, and the bruises on her child, and I knew that was bullshit. There was nothing holy there. Only love is sacred and heterosexuals don't own that. I am thankful that the days of anti-intellectualism are over. The last 8 years were like a steady diet of Ho-Hos for the brain. Both Al Gore and John Kerry were torpedoed by this and the vicious assertions of a wicked propagandist, Karl Rove. Ironically, it was Karl Rove's own predictions about the outcomes of each state that we were following last night. He's undoubtedly a genius, but something got twisted up inside him and he should go down in history as a creep and frankly, a traitor. Who the hell forced Palin on John McCain anyway? Some pale imitation of Rove? "Let's put another slogan-totin' cowboy up there, only let's put him in a skirt and get the wimmin's vote!" What a horrible mistake. And yet, THANK YOU! I must say that Rob and I stopped the tivo and got the boys in to watch John McCain's concession speech. We wanted them to see how a great man behaves in the face of defeat. I believe he is a good man and if he had won the Republican nomination 8 years ago, the world would look very different to us now. Still, this diet of hotdogs with Clinton and Ho-Hos with Bush are what has brought us to a new craving for something holistic and someone substantial who will walk beside us through the dark days ahead. The next eight years will be undeniably hard, but with Obama, I don't think we will feel so alone. Up and at 'em! L 10/27/08 -- Sharon here: I spent time with Lucy and filmed her latest blog. I'm going to put it up in daily segments. Here's the first one about Feel the Love Day. UPDATED 10/28/08 -- Lucy talks about working on the Zoe Bell movie, Angel of Death. It was a riotous night. Reminded me of the routines Andy Kaufman used to do. At one point, Lucy took over and began interviewing Loudon <G> 10/28/08 -- Added Lucy's blog about working on Angel of Death. There is an interview with Zoe and photos of Lucy as Vera on Tubefilter.tv 10/27/08 -- I popped over to Lucy's house today and did some filming to catch up on things she's been doing. I'll post the blog in daily segments starting today. Earlier in the day, she did an interview with TV Guide about her guest role on CSI: Miami that will run in the magazine covering the week of Nov. 10 - 16. 10/20/08 -- Dave Hill Explosion Tues, Oct. 21 -- 10:30pm UCB Theatre -- 5919 Franklin Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 323-908-8702 with guests Lucy Lawless and Loudon Wainwright III 10/14/08 -- New message from Lucy with a hint about what she has planned for the Roxy! Ticket info here. 10/3/08 -- Lucy's working on The L Word and sends thanks for all the support the audience gave her at the San Francisco concert. Also, a tip of the hat to the fans who submitted videos. Here are the four that were used at this past weekend's show. Angela "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" Berkin "Damn I Wish I Was Your Love" Angela "Hallelujah" Sara "Bitch" 10/1/08 -- And now . . . The Squirrel Tapes! 9/29/08 -- The fan music video submissions were quite successful. As Lucy said, there are a lot of talented editors in Xena fandom. Four of them were used in the Herbst show. And we're gathering some of the others to potentially use at another concert. I'm going to post tomorrow the videos that were used. Here's another clip from the dress rehearsal -- Lucy doing "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover." 9/28/08 -- Lucy took her concert to San Francisco this weekend and brought the house down with a great performance and some unexpected frivolity. I've never been backstage during Lucy's shows, but I was this weekend. I'll tell that story later. The reason I bring it up is that when Lucy left the stage after her encore, she came up to me to ask how the show went. I heard the crowd continuing to cheer and yell and starting to chant her name. I hollered at her, "You want to know how it went, listen to that! You gotta go out and take another bow!" She'd never done that before, but I kept waving my arms saying, "You gotta go out there!!" So she did. And that brought about the frivolity. They had been playing around with an idea during the dress rehearsal to redo one of the concert songs based on the audience saying what style they would like the song sung in that would be different from the normal version. So that's what Lucy decided to do. The finale song was "Bitch" and she shouted out to the audience to suggest another style. They came up with Bluegrass. So the band broke into the number. And then Lucy asked for another style and they did a Blues version. Below is Lucy doing the song country style during the dress rehearsal. Lots more rehearsal footage and stories to come. And thanks to all who made the trek to San Fran for a wonderful night! 9/21/08 -- LUCY ON CSI: MIAMI AND THE L WORD! Read the new message from Lucy above. She also gives us a first-hand view of what it's like to be the offspring of a person in the political arena. 9/2/08 -- MAKE A VIDEO FOR LUCY'S SAN FRAN CONCERT! Check out Lucy's message. Lucy's asking for video submissions to use behind some of the songs she's going to be performing at her San Francisco concert Sept. 27. The deadline for submissions is Sept. 15. As you can see from Lucy's note, she's thinking of using them at this concert, but it isn't guaranteed. She might use them at a later date. If you have any questions, contact me at lucylawlessfanclub@dslextreme.com 8/17/08 -- Lucy will be doing a full solo concert at the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco on Saturday, September 27, at 8pm. You can buy tickets here. You can read about the concert here. I should have a blog from her about it shortly. Michael Orland will again be her musical director. I'm guessing some of the band members from her last Roxy gig will be there. It should be a great night! I wonder what she'll be wearing? <G> 7/22/08 -- Lucy seems to have been high atop a mountain in Queenstown, NZ -- and she had her trusty iPhone with her. So we get not only a new message, but a photo as well. ![]() (skiing Mt. Coronet, NZ) Lucy has also confirmed that she will be at the San Diego Comic-Con this Thursday, July 24, 4:45 - 5:45pm in Ballroom 20. It's a panel called "SCREAM" Like a Girl hosted by director Kevin Smith. 7/1/08 -- Two more CityWalk concert clips with the songs that ended the show, "River Deep Mountain High" and "Bitch," er, "Witch." <G> ![]() 6/29/08 -- Lucy and Friends after CityWalk concert. 6/29/08 -- Two more CityWalk concert clips -- "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" and "Like the Way I Do." ![]() 6/28/08 AFTER THE CONCERT! I always loved going to concerts in Central Park when I lived in New York City. The music going out over the buildings, filling the sky. The cool winds, people filled with excitement at being outdoors and everyone swaying in time with each other. It was magical. And Lucy's concert tonight brought it all back. She soared on the waving hands and raised voices of the fans up front and made converts of the people walking by. Here's "What's Up," "Fooled Around and Fell In Love," and "Hallelujah." 6/28/08 -- TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT -- LUCY'S FREE CITYWALK CONCERT! And yesterday, the band met for the first time. It's incredible. When Michael handed them the song charts, that was the first time they had seen them except for two songs that are holdovers from the Roxy 08 concert. Which tells you that she's using the same musicians. That's the skill it takes to be a studio musician -- they hand the the music and you begin to play. Magnificently, I might add. Here's a taste of "Are You Gonna Be My Girl." 6/26/08 -- More CityWalk rehearsing with Michael Orland as they go through "Hallelujah." And meet Michael's two music-loving dogs. 6/23/08 -- New message from Lucy about working as a troll on Bedtime Stories and prepping for this Saturday's concert at CityWalk. 6/22/08 -- Lucy has started rehearsals with Michael Orland for the CityWalk concert this coming Saturday. They meet in Michael's studio, along with two very large dogs! Today they worked on what songs to include from Lucy's five concerts and what order to put them in. Here's a bit of "Superstar." 6/20/08 -- Here she is, right in the beauty parlor. Quality of the photo isn't that great, but check out those eyes against the new color. 6/19/08 -- Lucy's getting her hair done. Normally that wouldn't rate an announcement, but . . . wait till you see the photos she's taking with her phone as it shapes up. Word to the wise, check back to this space. Meanwhile, here is the first of a series of clips of the dress rehearsal of Lucy's London concert. 5/31/08 -- LUCY CITY WALK CONCERT Universal City Walk Concert Los Angeles, CA June 28, 2008 9PM about one hour long in front of the movie theatre 5/21/08 -- New message from Lucy with heaps of thanks for the great time we all had at the London concerts. And she's going to be doing a free concert up at Universal City Walk on June 28 -- come one and all! 5/5/08 -- Lucy was texting me and I didn't know it so above are two new messages. One about the concert -- which hadn't happened yet. And one about Marissa on Dancing. The concert, if you haven't heard from those who were there yet, was the best!! Best band, best club, best sound and lights -- oh, yeah, and Lucy's performance. Just a tad . . . spectacular!!! We were breathless when it was over. People were standing around in shock. Fourteen songs, only two of which we had heard her do before. I just don't know how she puts these shows together with so little time. By the end of Sunday's show, the audience was so loud the performers were holding their ears and falling over laughing at the hysteria they were creating <G> And then there was Lucy's pants or, should I say, the lack thereof. I heard the photos were winging their way around the world before the clock chimed midnight. After the Sunday show when the audience had gone home and the set was struck, Lucy said, "Take my picture, take my picture!" So I did. 4/23/08 -- You may have noticed the new message from Lucy about the content of the upcoming London concert. I think the people sitting down at the show are going to be glued to their seats and the standees are going to be passing out all over the floor! What a ride this is going to be <G> 4/6/08 -- The SciFi channel has started to post Lucy's Battlestar interview and part 1 is now online. She told me she answered 12 questions so there will be more to come. 4/1/08 -- Message from Lucy about Marissa making it through the latest round on Dancing! Also news on BSG, Bedtime Stories and a couple girls we know doing their religious best in an upcoming movie called Bitch Slap. 3/18/08 -- Lucy filmed her Battlestar bit on the David Letterman with the BSG cast. 3/8/08 -- Many of the Battlestar cast are going to be on David Letterman, probably next week, doing "Ten Reasons to Watch Battlestar Galactica." Lucy will be joining them if she can get the time off from filming Bedtime Stories. 3/3/08 -- Check out Lucy's new blog -- she's been cast in Adam Sandler's Christmas release feature film, Bedtime Stories!! Talk about everything falling into place, it's an incredible tale of how things come about in Hollywood. 2/17/08 -- Just added the David Mack "Cowboy Lucy" drawing for sale in the photo section. It's an 11 x 14 print on parchment paper. As in the past, Lucy has signed some of them and they'll be sent out randomly. The paper is pure white although my scan came out a bit gray. 1/13/08 -- New message from Lucy talking about the exciting time she had meeting Dean Kamen at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas. The inventor of the Segway got her fired up about getting more kids involved in science and technology. We're going to need brilliant minds to get through the problems we're dealing with now. She also is giving us a hint about her upcoming concert at the Roxy. It involves cowgirls and evening gowns! And, to celebrate her foray into country music, she's releasing the David Mack drawing of "Cowboy Lucy." It will be for sale on the website and at the convention. An 11 x 14 print on parchment paper. 1/7/08 -- Lucy's Saturday Roxy concert sold out! Not a square inch left in the room. Friday VIP tickets are sold out and there are only a few standing room tickets left for Friday. Talked with Lucy over the weekend and she's so excited about the show she's planning. I told her to get the camera ready to record some rehearsals so we could have a peek at what she's planning. 1/3/08 -- Let's start the New Year with a clip from Coffee Talk 6 starring Lucy and Renee. This clip is called "The Missing Voice of Elmo." Lucy tells the story of her appearance at a benefit for the Young Storytellers Foundation. There will be another clip up on the Official Xena Fan Club page tomorrow. 12/29/07 -- Here are a couple photos from the filming of Coffee Talk 6. Next week, I'm going to get a couple clips from the shoot and put them up here and on the Xena Fan Club page. 12/15/07 -- Here's part two of the Disco Lucy video series. The silver mini makes its appearance. Out comes the jewelry and curling iron and food! Lucy's getting hungry. This photo shoot took the whole day. 9/23/07 -- In an earlier message, Lucy talked about the photo shoot that gave birth to Disco Lucy. Here's the first in a series of clips that shows what led up to the photo I'm using as a still to click on for the videoclip. 8/13/07 -- Lucy's back behind the camera with her finger on the zoom button and Marissa's the target. Marissa tells a "dumb blonde Lucy" story and mimics a soundman overwhelmed by a Kiwi actress' accent. 8/12/07 -- Here comes Part Two of Lucy's recent adventures. This time she's at the REAF rehearsal singing "Footloose" with Gene Reed and Marissa Jaret Winokur has the camera. 8/11/07 -- I gave Lucy the club videocamera to take to Comic Con and the REAF benefit. Her daughter, Daisy, was with her and started the filming. Then Lucy got her hands on the camera and Katie Sackoff was her target. Onward Lucy and the camera went to San Francisco and, well, you'll see what happened there tomorrow. 6/26/07 -- As she's done previously, Lucy signed some of the new Heart Tattoo shirts and the Alek Adorian outfits photos. I took a photo of her working with the designer of the shirt. Instead of notes inside the hems of the shirts, she signed on the front. When it came to signing the new items, as so often happens, we did it out of the back of my car. It was a dark street on a dark night. I'm glad a squad car didn't drive past us and ask what we were doing. Ah, adventures with Lucy. 3/30/07 -- You all know Lucy's performing at the Dinah Shore Weekend Girl Bar Pure White Party tonight at the Hotel Zoso. (Boy, that's mouthful!) Yesterday afternoon she met with choreographer Michael Schwandt and her dancers and went over the three numbers she'll be performing at midnight. Got out my trusty camera and filmed the rehearsal. Click on the image below (QT version) to watch Lucy working out to "I'm the Only One" by Melissa Etheridge. She started out getting a few of the steps in the hallway while another performer was going through their routine. Then it was into the studio and under the hot lights. Boy, I miss the smell of Warrior Dancer sweat <G> (wmv version) (Big file, give it time to load) 2/24/07 -- I popped over to Lucy's house and she regaled me with the story about how the cd came about. She mentions that it started with a photo shoot which I filmed and I'll start putting up clips from that day. It was wild and crazy and Lucy was having a ball! 2/4/07 -- Lucy's CD "come2me" is now online for ordering. Click links to hear songs. ![]() "Let It Whip" and four remixes of "Come To Me." 10/14/06 -- I spent some time with Lucy talking about the aftereffects of being on Celebrity Duets. It seems the experience left her with a burning desire to do more singing! Have a listen to the QT version. (wmv version) ![]() ![]() 3/29/06 -- I know Lucy's parents must be pleased as punch with the award she received today.
